Just like hard drive failure, your electronic identity will be stolen.  It’s not a question of IF, but simply a question of WHEN!

By now you had to have heard of the Dark Web.  When hackers hack a network, the data is often downloaded and posted for sale to the Dark Web or sometimes simply posted.  Sources range from everything from cars broken into like several recent highly publicized Revenue Canada staff vehicle break ins and laptops stolen with private data not encrypted to nearly every major corporation including Adobe, Google, Microsoft and I could go on forever.  Not only passwords are stolen but driver license info, social insurance numbers, your address, your phone numbers and much more data than you’d like spread out on the DarkWeb.  That is also why you should never reuse passwords because if they get one, they can often get into multiple systems.

I hear all the time “how do I remember all my passwords”.  It’s easy.  Use a password manager like 1Password or LastPass.  Do not use the embedded password storage in Chrome or Microsoft Edge because if someone gets into your system, they get all your passwords.

A password manager like 1Password or LastPass requires you to only remember 1 password, the access password for that and it is very well integrated into most platforms and systems including Android phones and tablets, Apple products like the iPhone and iPad, Windows and Apple’s systems and browsers too.

The caveat is if using 1Password or LastPass, if you forget and don’t document your password, you are up the proverbial sh*t creek without a paddle.  Both provide a method to print and record your password you can store in a safety deposit box, or somewhere secure in your home should you forget or worse yet, something happens to you and people need to access your systems.

I digress through.  How do you know if you’ve been compromised?  I sell a service that is geared to businesses that monitors the dark web and emails me when an account I monitor has been compromised.  For a limited time, I’m offering a free search of your email to see if it’s been compromised.  Email me atdcbour@desktopsolutioncenter.ca and I will do a search for you and email you the results.
